Why do we need Defibrillators?

The Resuscitation Council (UK) strongly recommends early defibrillation as a policy. For the best chance of survival, an AED should be deployed within the first 3 to 4 minutes.

The likelihood of a successful resuscitation decreases by 10 percent with every minute delayed. After approximately 10 minutes without defibrillation, few people survive, if they do, you have to wonder what state they may come back as the brain has been starved of oxygen for a long period. Unfortunately the average response time for emergency medical services is said to be eight minutes but in reality, it can take longer for the necessary equipment & trained personnel to arrive. Training employees in the use of defibrillators & cpr can minimize time-to-defibrillation when every minute counts.

Of the 150 000 sudden cardiac arrest that occur in the UK each year, more than 75 000 might have been saved if an AED had been available in the first few minutes.

It is also a leading cause of death in Europe, affecting about 700,000 individuals a year. Statistics show that starting CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) & the immediate availability of a defibrillator (AED – automated external defibrillator) increases the chances of survival from 5% to more than 50%.

Defibrillators are very safe, simple, easy to operate and pose no risk to either the rescuer or the victim.
Providing life saving medical treatment, they use voice and visual prompts to guide rescuers every step of the way and are suitable for use by rescuers of all skill levels. AEDs can be strategically placed within a workplace, similar to the convenience of fire extinguishers, so that responders have immediate access to this potentially lifesaving equipment. Public access defibrillation (PAD) first-responder programmes are now widespread, the life it saves could be someone you know, the evidence to support purchasing a defibrillator is overwhelming
